About Westfield, NJ

Located in Union County, Westfield NJ covers 6.7 square miles and has a population of more than 29,000 residents. Richard Nicolls, Governor of New York, purchased the lands west of Elizabeth Town in the mid-17th Century from local natives for two guns, two kettles, 10 bars of lead, 20 handfuls of powder and several hundred wampum beads, wrote Jayne Book Salomon in her 2010 book, “Images of America: Westfield.” It is said that the name comes from the fields west of Elizabeth.

The Westfield School District is A+ rated by and ranked #4 out of 243 schools districts as best for athletes. The district serves 6,299 students in PK, K-12 with a student teacher ratio of 12:1. There are five elementary schools, two middle schools, and Westfield Senior High School.

Downtown Westfield, with over 200 retail establishments and 400 commercial enterprises, is a regional destination in New Jersey. The Downtown Westfield Corporation (DWC) manages the Special Improvement District (SID) area's growth and enhancement. The DWC participates in the National Main Street program associated with the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Westfield was ranked 31st safest city in NJ in an annual survey by Safewise, a home security company. The survey includes towns with populations over 2,500 residents and that exceed the median population for the state.
